Dr. Kip Wheeler stands with Alpha Chi member Libby Turner of Chattanooga. Turner, a Carson-Newman junior, competed in the Gaston-Noelle category during this year's national convention. Her paper was titled, "A Common Plea: Understanding the Underdog in the 17th Century."

(Aug. 27, 2021) Carson-Newman Alpha Chi sponsor, Dr. Kip Wheeler, was commended for his leadership and guidance in the honor society this past year. Under his leadership, C-N students in the Tennessee Delta Chapter won top scholarships and positions during this year's National Convention held virtually April 8-11.

"I am very pleased to commend Dr. Kip Wheeler, who this past year ensured that many…high-achieving students were recognized for their exemplary academic work with membership in Alpha Chi," said Laura Noah, executive director of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society.

In a letter to C-N President Charles A. Fowler, she noted that while some chapters found it a challenge to keep up normal activity, Tennessee Delta inducted new members from among the top ten percent of Carson-Newman’s upperclassmen.

Dr. wheeler, who is also an associate professor of English, is serving as the primary Alpha Chi advisor for the 2021-22 academic year. He has been working with the C-N chapter for over a decade.

Dr. Jeremy Buckner, C-N's provost, said Wheeler's leadership continues to advance Carson-Newman's academic excellence through the prestige and honor of Alpha Chi. He also said Wheeler is incredibly brilliant yet bridles his intellect with warm-heartedness and kindness.

"It comes as no surprise to me that Dr. Wheeler would be recognized by Alpha Chi for his exemplary leadership. Kip is engaging to speak with on any number of topics and he is equally willing to help without hesitation," he said. "I am very pleased to hear of his recognition beyond our campus–for Kip, as we all know at C-N, is remarkable."

Dr. Shawn O'Hare, dean of the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said Wheeler is the epitome of the C-N professor.

"Not only is he outstanding in the classroom, but he is also extremely dedicated to the students. His leadership of Alpha Chi only underscores how much he cares about C-N students and how hard he has worked on their behalf," he said.

On his commendation, Wheeler said he feels extremely lucky to be involved with Alpha Chi and it's been a true blessing to be a faculty liaison between the school and the National Honor Society.

"Our Alpha Chi students represent the best qualities of Carson-Newman, and it's always a treasure to work with bright, energetic, ambitious young students. Our local chapter hopes to continue a tradition of scholarly success and recognize academic achievements among the student body," he said.
