David Gonzalez

Visiting Professor of Music

Dr. David Gonzalez is an accomplished low brass teacher, conductor, and artist. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts with a Euphonium Teaching Assistantship at Arizona State University, while concurrently earning a second Master of Music in Wind Band Conducting. He also held a Teaching Assistantship with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Pride of the Southland Marching Band while completing a Master of Music in Tuba Performance. His primary teachers include Christian Carichner, Dr. Kelly Thomas, Dr. Alexander Lapins, Dr. Benjamin Pierce, and Dr. Deanna Swoboda. His conducting teachers include Gary Hill, Gary Sousa, Dr. Jason Caslor, and Dr. Jamal Duncan. 

Dr. Gonzalez has extensive experience teaching high school and middle school bands in Arkansas, Tennessee, Arizona, and Oklahoma, using the famed “Breathing Gym” developed by Patrick Sheridan and Sam Pilafian. He has also taught Instrumental All-State Clinics at the University of Central Arkansas, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Tennessee. 

As a competitor, Dr. Gonzalez has achieved national and regional success, including being a Finalist for the Army Band Mock Audition, Runner-Up at the Music Teacher’s National Association, and Winner of the Honors Recital Competition at the University of Arkansas. His most recent performance was a guest artist solo recital at the 2024 International Tuba Euphonium Conference held at Middle Tennessee State University. 

Dr. Gonzalez has performed as principal Euphonium with the Arizona State Wind Orchestra and is a former member of the Salt River Brass Band directed by Patrick Sheridan. He has also performed with the Conway Symphony Orchestra, University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, University of Tennessee-Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Roanoke Symphony Opera (Virginia), University of Tennessee’s Graduate Brass Quintet (which traveled to Thessaloniki, Greece), Southern Stars Brass Band, Arkansas MusicWorks Brass Band, and the University of Central Arkansas’ Dixieland Band. His diverse performing career spans both Tuba and Euphonium. 

His current affiliations include the International Tuba Euphonium Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America Alumni, the College Band Directors National Association, and the International Women’s Brass Conference Site Selection Committee. 

Dr. Gonzalez performs on a Willson 2900 TA-1 Euphonium, Yamaha 621 F Tuba, and a PT-6 Piston CC Tuba.
