Maston Lecture, Feb. 23 category: Campus News | February 15, 2017 Dr. Myles Werntz (Feb. 15, 2017) – Carson-Newman University will host a lecture by Dr. Myles Werntz on Thursday, Feb. 23. The event is held as part of the institution’s annual T.B. Maston Lecture. Werntz serves as T.B. Maston Chair of Christian Ethics at Hardin-Simmons University’s Logsdon Seminary.His lecture “The Ones Far Off Brought Near: Refugees and Christian Witness,” will be held at Thomas Recital Hall in Tarr Music Center at 9:30 a.m. “I invited Myles to give this lecture because he is a rising star among Baptist ethicists,” said Dr. Andrew Smith, assistant professor of religion. “He has a voice in the public square to which others pay attention, and I know that his words about immigration in this historical moment will be valued by the university community.”Free and open to the public, this event is co-sponsored by the Center for Baptist Studies and the T. B. Maston Foundation. The lecture series is an annual event that honors Jefferson County native T.B. Maston. Following his 1920 Carson-Newman graduation, he attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving both the MRE and Doctorate in Religious Education in 1925. Further study produced the MA degree from Texas Christian University and a PhD from Yale University. He later studied at both the University of North Carolina and the University of Chicago.
