The three featured guests talked to the women’s group about the University’s Best Buddies Program. (March 12, 2014)– On Saturday, March 8, Carson-Newman University’s Les Amies held its last meeting until the fall. The morning brunch featured representatives from the University’s Best Buddies program, Faculty advisor Dr. Kim Hawkins and Best Buddies peers Katie Moore and Holly Newman. The three spoke to the women’s organization about Best Buddies, which seeks to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Last year Carson-Newman’s Best Buddies program was named Tennessee’s Chapter of the Year. Carson-Newman’s Chapter competed against Tennessee’s five other college chapters, which include Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Middle Tennessee State University, Trevecca Nazarene University and Vanderbilt University. This summer, Moore and Newman will represent C-N at the International Leadership Conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. For over three decades, Les Amies has served as a connection between Carson-Newman and the Jefferson City community. The women’s group annually awards the Brona Maddox Les Amies Scholarship to a female student from Jefferson County.
