New events to highlight Homecoming 2013

Carson-Newman University will kick off its week of 2013 Homecoming festivities on Sunday, Oct. 13, with the “Orange and Blue” Run and Walk 5k. Also new this year is a “Blast to the Past” Cruise-In.

“Homecoming is an event for more than just students and alumni,” said Amy Reed, associate director of alumni relations and Homecoming coordinator. “Homecoming is for our entire community. With the addition of events like the “Orange and Blue Run” and Cruise-In, we welcome the community to come and celebrate with us.”

This year also celebrates the University’s commitment to service, both at home and worldwide, with its Homecoming theme “More to Serve. More to Life.”

Community Homecoming events include:

• “Orange and Blue” Run and Walk 5k: Registration begins Sunday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m., and the race begins at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $20 for individuals or $15 for members of a group or team. The starting line will be near Carson-Newman’s Campus Ministries House located on Branner Ave. The event, sponsored by the Carson-Newman Student Ambassador Association, benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Dumplin Valley. Pre-registration is available online.

• “Blast to the Past” Cruise-In: Friday, Oct. 18, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the rear lot of the Maddox Student Activities Center. Registration for the Cruise-In is free and any antique, street rod or daily drivers are welcome to attend. The first 50 registrants will receive goody bags. • “Big River” Production: A musical based off Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” Big River is performed by C-N’s Lyric Theatre in Gentry Auditorium. Performances are Friday, Oct. 18, and Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. Call (865) 471-4163 to purchase tickets.

• Fifth annual Henrietta Jenkins Poetry Reading: Saturday, Oct. 19, from 1 to 2 p.m. The featured poet is Poet Laureate of North Carolina, Joseph Bathanti. The event will be held in C-N’s Thomas Recital Hall located in the Tarr Music Center.

• The Saint John’s Bible Exhibit:  Will be open during Homecoming weekend from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m..  Visit http://www.cn.edu/saint-johns-bible for more information.

• Homecoming Parade: Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. on campus.
